To all of our musician brethren and anyone who loves music. Go to the theater. See ‘Echo in the Canyon’.
It is an amazing look at the music scene in Laurel Canyon in the late 60s and 70s.
My takeaway: It was about collaboration. People just joining others to play music. Not a ‘this is MY music’ and ‘I wrote this’ atmosphere. It was – hey that is a really cool riff, let’s see where we can take this. It was about knocking on a door with your guitar and saying, okay let’s see what we can come up with. There was cross pollination in the music. There was inspiration derived from the person sitting across from you.
So, as musicians who play covers and try our best to do them well, accurately or even put somewhat of a twist on it, we will continue to hone our skills. We will continue to play covers and reach into people’s memories. We will bring back that smile. We will remind you of that heartache. We will laugh with you at the silliness of our younger selves.
So songwriter or cover artist, it matters not. The goal is to entertain and do it well.
